Full Blown Addict

so, my first step in training for this 10k mud run is to give up my daily diet coke. This is huge for me. I realized I had an addiction around Christmas time but I haven't been willing thus far to quit. Yesterday was my first day and within 20 minutes of telling Darren that I was quitting I was walking the isles of Walmart telling him that I really needed a drink. Forget those quit smoking commercials on tv, I need support groups and "know the truth about Coke". My friend calls it her "dark master". My Mom sent emails out to the rest of us about the hazards of drinking coke - did you know that Coca-Cola uses its own product to clean out their truck engines - but somehow knowing all of this I just couldn't give it up. Anyways, a big hurdle for me - but I will conquer...I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!!! (until after the run that is:)
Water vs. Coke
WATER
-75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (This likely applies to half the world population.)
-In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
-One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied (in a University of Washington study).
-Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
-Preliminary research indicates that 8 to 10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
-A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
-Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
COKE
-In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
-You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
-To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.
- The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
-To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
-To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
-To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
-To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
-To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
-Coke will also clean road haze from your windshield.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
-The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days.
-Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
-To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the "Hazardous Material" place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
-The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is, would YOU like a glass of water or Coke?

Em, I'm proud of you. This will change your life. Here I am saying this when I'm in the same boat training for the 1st time. But I can see the change in my spirit already. It's totally bizar but my body is totally craving another jog and rejecting sweets. I'm still forcing them down but my body doesn't want them, my mind does. We are doing it!

Wow Em... I am impressed with your determination to this 10K. I bet you that you won't even want a Coke after this run... your stomach won't be able to handle it. I totally understand and agree with the statistics on water. I think I have been dehydrated since summer has began... I am trying to keep up with my drinking of water.

I agree with you on the water. I try and drink as much as I can all day. I do love myself a diet coke every once in a while! I try to keep it to a minimum of 1-2 a week. (It is great for those days you need a pick-me-up) But you are definatly making me rethink that.... good research.

I love ice-cold water. I prefer it too almost anything else. Now I just need some help conquering the sweets!

I've been absent, but loved catching up with you. As a NON-soda drinker I'll (easily) add that the caffeine in soda is made from Coffee. I won't ever stop loving sweets, but I am always happy that I would rather drink water than anything else, chalk-full of ice ofcourse. It makes me feel better about the popcorn and candy at the movies when I'm sipping on water.
